Senarath B. Basnayake has been in the field of gem trade, gem testing and teaching of Gemmology and gem business since 1983. He passed the Diploma in Gemmology of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain in 1983 and the MSc in Gemmology of the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 2003.

He is a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), a Life Member of the Gemmologists’ Association of Sri Lanka, Founder President of the Gem Industry, Trade, Exports and Services Association-Central Province (GITESA-CP), a Life Member of the Geological Society of Sri Lanka and a Founder Member of the Sri Lanka Association of Testing Laboratories.

He also has the Insurance Foundation Certificate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London and is a Wood Badge holder of the Sri Lanka Scout Association.
